Enjoy your candle safely
Candles have enriched our daily lives for centuries, filling our homes and hearts with their warm glow. But over the years, they have gained a reputation for being unsafe and are increasingly being replaced by LED candles. Like any fire, candles require the necessary care, attention and knowledge to use them safely. With these tips, you won’t have to worry about your safety any more. Because let’s face it, it’s that real flame that brightens up your day, offers comfort, brings you closer together, creates a sense of calm and gives you a warm feeling.
Check before lighting a candle
Before lighting your favourite candle, it’s important to inspect it carefully first.
- Is the wick the correct length? It is important that the wick is always no more than 1 cm long to ensure a stable flame. If your wick is too long or has an irregular shape, this can cause the flame to be too high or to flicker. Trim the wick to the correct length using a pair of (wick) scissors before lighting the candle.
- Is your candle in a safe place? Ensure you never place a candle near flammable materials and that it is on a heat-resistant surface or holder to prevent damage. Also, ensure that candles are at least 10 cm apart to prevent heat build-up and/or your candles from dripping.
- Is there sufficient ventilation? A flickering flame or smoke occurs when the teardrop shape of the flame is disrupted. This is because there is either too much or just too little air reaching the flame. Therefore, never place a candle in a sealed container or in a direct draught (for example, near an open window).
Keep an eye on your burning candle
We all know that you must not leave a burning candle unattended and must keep it out of reach of pets and children.
But did you also know that ...
... you should always leave 1 cm of wax in your glass candle holders? If you let a candle in a glass holder burn until the wax has completely melted away, the heat can cause the holder to leave a burn mark on the surface beneath it.
... you must not use tea lights with a burn time of more than 4 hours in a heat holder or in wax melt burners? The heat can build up to such a high level that the entire tea light could catch fire.
... our rustic pillar candles contain a self-extinguishing wick? This means the flame goes out automatically when it reaches the bottom. So never remove the sticker at the bottom of the candle, as that is the self-extinguishing wick.
... it’s best not to extinguish candles by blowing them out? Blowing out the flame can cause the wax to splatter, which may damage the surrounding surface. You should therefore always use a candle snuffer.
... you should never move a burning or still-warm candle? The molten wax can spill over the edge and cause burns to the skin. The movement can also cause the flame to suddenly draw in too much oxygen, causing it to flare up and potentially set the surrounding area alight. Furthermore, the wick may shift or bend, making it dangerous when you relight the candle.
... not every holder is suitable for burning candles? Avoid candle holders made of flammable materials such as wood and plastic, and ensure there is enough space between the candle and the holder so that the heat can escape. Some glass holders may also crack due to the heat because the glass is not heat-resistant.

Follow expert advice
Generally speaking, social media captures our attention and we often turn to it for tips and trends. But this does not mean that the person posting the message is an expert. When watching videos about candles, you should ask yourself whether the person posting the content is a reliable source. If something looks dangerous to you, it probably is. So always use your common sense and make sure you’re well-informed about the candles you buy.
As a well-informed candle buyer, you’ll get more enjoyment out of your candles. This way, you’ll better preserve their quality, they’ll last longer and you’ll ensure they’re used safely. On the packaging of every candle, you’ll find icons indicating how to burn the candle safely. Not sure what they mean? Read the safety instructions here.
